Prediction: Senators 3rd period Moneyline (+105)

Key Points:

    • Senators have scored more 3rd period goals than any other playoff team
    • Pens goals FOR thus far: 1st period (14) – 2nd period (14) – 3rd period (4)
    • Pens goals AGAINST thus far: 1st period (8) – 2nd period (5) – 3rd period (9)
    • Sens goals thus far: 1st period (6) – 2nd period (4) – 3rd period (14)
    • Senators have scored more 3rd period goals than any other playoff team
    • Sens goals AGAINST thus far: 1st period (6) – 2nd period (11) – 3rd period (1)
      • Yes, they’ve scored 14 3rd period goals, and only allowed 1

Summary:

  • Pens come out strong, and collapse in the 3rd
  • Sens come out slow, and excel in the 3rd

Tonight the Ottawa Senators welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins back to Ottawa for game 4, after a huge blow to the Penguins in Game 3, where they were only seconds away from going up 3-0 in the series, but a last second goal forced OT, where the Sens would eventually go on to win in double OT. It’s absolutely out of the question to think that the Sens will not feed off of this win, and how it will impact the Pens will likely have a huge outcome on the rest of the series.

There was a huge difference in Game 3 versus Games 1 and 2 in Pittsburgh, and it was Ottawa Goaltender Craig Anderson. After being pulled from both games in Pittsburgh due to allowing several easy goals slip by, Anderson was an absolutely different animal in Game 3. It’s like he somehow morphed into Jonathan Quick overnight, and even the all-star offense of the Pens were only able to squeeze one puck by him in over 90 minutes of play. If they want to win tonight, I don’t think there is an option outside of somehow putting more than one goal in net. It has been shown that the Senators are an incredible third period team, and if you’re tied or only up one goal going into it, that’s bad news for their opposition.

Malkin’s 8 game point streak finally came to an end in Game three, and at the end of the game you could see the frustration, as he snapped his own stick in half. We all know what happens when Malkin loses his head, and it is NOT good for the Pens. It is clear that some of these ‘pesky’ Senators have gotten into his head, and I would be shocked not to see him take several stupid penalties tonight. I don’t think it will be enough to allow the Sens to put up big numbers against the Pens, but it could certainly be enough to knock the Pens off their offensive game.

The Senators have seen a lot of success across all four of their lines, and Coach Paul MacLean has expressed his happiness with all of his players. They have made it clear that they are feeding off of the fact that they are known to be a “pesky” team, like a fly who won’t go away. Whatever they’re doing, it seems to be working.

That being said, I don’t know for sure which side will take the victory tonight, but if the Sens want a chance, Anderson is going to have to stand on his head just as well as he did last game. I think Malkin will be a big factor in the game. When he loses his shit, he starts taking bad penalties, making bad passes, and it will likely cost the Pens a goal or two. I think what we can bank on tonight is the Senators giving it their all to go back to Pittsburgh with the series tied up 2-2. I don’t think we will see a wide open back and forth style game tonight, and accordingly I think we are getting lucky with the total line.

Pick: Senators 3rd period Moneyline (+105)
