Prediction: Penguins (-1) @ -136

Key Points:

  • Pens are 6-1 in last 7 meetings head-to-head in Pittsburgh
  • Pens are 7-2 in last 9 after scoring 5 or more goals in previous game
  • Pens are 41-12 in last 53 home games
  • Senators are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. Atlantic

The Pittsburgh Penguins welcome the Ottawa Senators back to Pittsburgh for Game 5 of their best of seven series. The Pens currently lead the series 3-1, and tonight will be an opportunity to put the pesky Sens away for good. I was not confident in the Pens mental state for Game 4, but boy was I wrong. It was clear that during the first two periods, there were a few of the mistakes that I suspected would happen, including penalties by Cooke and Malkin and some bad turnovers, but when I suspected the Sens to pounce in the third, the exact opposite happened.

The Senators have been the absolute stand-out best third period team in the NHL for this entire playoff season. Prior go the third period of Game 4, the Sens had 16 goals for and only 1 goal against. That all changed when the Pens began the period by netting two quick goals in the opening minutes of the period. After that it was all downhill for the Sens. The Senators, for the second time this series, ended up pulling goaltender Anderson as it was evident that the Pens had his number, and everything they were putting on him was seemingly the perfect shot. The Sens thought perhaps backup goalie Lehtonen would be able to finish the period. That didn’t happen. The Pens just as quickly pounced on him as they did Anderson, and ended up putting up five goals in the third period, where the Sens only put in one, concluding the game with a 7-3 Pens win.

I have never seen a group of fans look as deflated as the Senators fans during this third period, particularly as they were expecting their incredible third period team to step up and make a play to win the game, and the complete opposite happened. Now the Senators have to go back to Pittsburgh and fight for their playoff futures. The home team across all conference semifinal playoff series is now 14-3, and the Pens have not lost to Ottawa at home yet, winning game one 4-1 and game two 4-3. The Senators saw a lot of action from their stars in Game 4, with Karlsson and Spezza getting plenty of shots on net, and accordingly they were able to put in a few goals due to some poor defensive play in front of the Pens net, but it was clearly not enough.

I expect the Pens to correct the problems that were evident in front of their own crease, and this should eliminate the Senators ability to put in a few scrappy garbage goals. I think the Pens will come into tonight’s game smelling blood in the water, and will come out with all guns blazing. To put it lightly, the Pens have plenty of firepower on both offense and defense. If Vokoun can keep the puck out of the net and the Pens defense can get the puck out of the crease safely, Ottawa shouldn’t have a chance. Expect the Pens to shut down the Senators by a multi-goal deficit tonight and move on to the conference finals.

Pick: Penguins (-1) @ -136
